The music world is mourning the loss of legendary soul and R&B vocalist Jim Gilstrap, whose unmistakable voice helped define some of the most memorable songs of the 1970s. Gilstrap passed away from natural causes in Los Angeles on July 18, 2026, at the age of 79.
Over a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, Gilstrap became one of the music industry’s most respected and sought-after session vocalists. While many recognize him as one of the voices behind the iconic theme song for the beloved sitcom Good Times, his contributions reached far beyond television.
Born on November 10, 1946, in Texas, Gilstrap served in the military before pursuing music full-time. His breakthrough came in the early 1970s when he joined Stevie Wonder’s backing band and vocal group, Wonderlove. Gilstrap famously sang the opening lines of Wonder’s Grammy-winning classic “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” from the landmark album Talking Book. He also contributed vocals to several of Wonder’s celebrated albums, including Innervisions and Fulfillingness’ First Finale.
As a solo artist, Gilstrap found chart success in 1975 with “Swing Your Daddy,” which reached No. 10 on the U.S. R&B chart and No. 4 in the United Kingdom. He followed that success with “I’m on Fire,” another Top 20 R&B hit. Both songs appeared on his debut album, Swing Your Daddy. In 1976, he released his second studio album, Love Talk.
Throughout his career, Gilstrap’s soaring tenor could be heard on recordings by an extraordinary list of artists, including Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, James Ingram, George Benson, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, and Teddy Pendergrass, among many others.
His nephew, Geoff Gil, remembered him not only for his remarkable musical gifts but also for the man he was away from the spotlight.
“Beyond the music, we’ll remember Jim’s kindness, humility, humor, generosity and, of course, his homemade sweet potato pies that brought our family together. As we celebrate Uncle Jim’s remarkable life, we can’t help but thank God for those ‘Good Times’… and how lucky we were to have him.”

Jim Gilstrap was the last surviving member of 10 siblings. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, along with his children and grandchildren. Memorial service details have not yet been announced.
