Gospel Legend Bishop Rance Allen Has Passed Away at 71

One of Gospel’s icons, Bishop Rance Lee Allen, died at the age of 71. The cause of death hasn’t been revealed but his passing was shared on the Missouri Midwest Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction – COGIC Facebook page.

The heartbreaking news was also shared on the Rance Allen Group Instagram page:

“While recovering from a medical procedure at Heartland ProMedica [in Sylvania, OH], Bishop Rance Allen passed away around 3 AM this morning,” said Allen’s wife of 49 years, Ellen Allen, and his manager, Toby Jackson, in a joint statement. “I wasn’t expecting to hear this news this morning,” said Tyscot Records President, Bryant Scott, who was nearly speechless upon hearing of the singer’s death. “This is a great loss to us personally but also to the church community at large.” #RanceAllen#BishopRanceAllen#COGIC

The family opted for a private memorial service due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the church plans on celebrating Bishop Allen’s life in a bigger way after restrictions are lifted.

Bishop Allen was known for his unique vocal ability, and was called “The Father of Contemporary Gospel Music”.

A gifted musician and anointed gospel singer, Bishop Allen and his brothers Tom and Steve formed The Rance Allen Group in 1969 and introduced thee world to a new contemporary and innovative gospel sound.  

Bishop Allen moved to Toledo in 1989 and was the pastor of New Bethel Church of God. He previously performed for President Barack Obama and was nominated for five Grammy Awards.

Bishop Allen has been married to Evangelist Ellen Marie Groves since December, 1970, and although they have no biological children, they shared their enormous love to many God-children.
