Dog Shoots and Kills Owner After Stepping On His Hunting Rifle

A Kansas man was tragically shot and killed in a freak accident caused by his own dog. The man, identified as Joseph Austin Smith, 30, was sitting in the front passenger seat of his car when his dog stepped on the rifle, causing it to go off and hit him in the back.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office said the accident unfolded Saturday in a truck on the 1600 block of East 80th Street, which is about 50 miles from Wichita, Kansas.

The officers responded to the area and found him in the front seat. They immediately started CPR on the individual but he unfortunately was pronounced dead at the scene.

KSNW-TV reported that there was another individual in the car, that was sitting in the driver’s seat. He was physically unharmed.

The sheriff’s office did not release the other individual’s name, who owned the truck, or if it moving at the time.

Let us please keep the family of Joseph Smith in our prayers as they deal with this tragedy.
