Are y’all ready for more Jill Scott?

The soulful Grammy award-winning queen will be headlining a “Def Poetry Jam” reunion this weekend that will raise money to benefit individuals affected by the COVID-19 crisis in Newark, including frontline workers.

Newark ‘s mayor Ras Baraka will also be making a special appearance with his spoken word.

Earlier this week Mayor Baraka @rasjbaraka ended his daily briefing with a poem by this star poet. The Legendary Black Ice and Jessica Care Moore will curate and host Def Poetry Jam: Healing, Power & Poetry this Saturday, May 23 @ 7PM EST,!which special guest Mayor Ras Baraka and Jill Scott! Proceeds will benefit COVID-19 relief, which is supporting Newark’s vulnerable and underserved community, with 25% going to artists in need. More than two dozen poets have been confirmed to perform, including Def Poetry all-stars such as Georgia Me @therealgeorgiame, Roger Bonair @rogerbonair, and Sunni Patterson @sunnipatterson. The production will introduce powerful new voices like Brandon “Real Talk” Alexander @brandonalexanderwilliams, Elisabeth Velasquez @elisabethvelasquezpoetry, Khemist @khemist_lv, and Jasmine Mans @poetjasminemans and feature legendary spoken word voices like Abiodun Oyewole @last_poet_abiodun of The Last Poets @thelastpoetsofficial. Actor and Def Poetry veteran Malcolm-Jamal Warner @malcolmjamalwar will make a special appearance and the show will also have a performance by Def Poetry Jam co-creator Danny Simmons @dannysimmonsjr, accompanied by jazz legend Ron Carter @roncarterbassist.
