Damon Wayans is checking into NBC’s St. Denis Medical for the Season 3 premiere, and he’s bringing some serious ’90s comedy nostalgia with him.
Wayans will guest star as Dr. Highland, a charming but pompous new physician who arrives at the underfunded Oregon hospital while David Alan Grier’s character, Ron, recovers from surgery. The appearance will reunite Wayans and Grier, who famously shared the screen as cast members of the groundbreaking sketch comedy series In Living Color.
NBC teased the reunion on social media, announcing, “Damon Wayans is checking in to St. Denis Medical! Catch his In Living Color reunion with David Alan Grier on the Season 3 premiere.”
According to the character description, Dr. Highland quickly becomes a favorite among the hospital’s staff and patients. His confidence, charm and medical expertise win over nearly everyone at St. Denis—except Allison Tolman’s Alex, who remains completely unimpressed by his charisma.
That dynamic is sure to create plenty of laughs when Highland steps into Ron’s absence.
Grier was a cast member throughout all five seasons of In Living Color, which aired on Fox from 1990 to 1994. Wayans was part of the series during its first three seasons and returned as a recurring cast member in Season 4. The series, created by Wayans’ brother Keenen Ivory Wayans, became a launching pad for numerous comedy stars and remains one of the most influential sketch shows in television history.
The two comedians have continued to cross paths over the years. Grier has also maintained a relationship with the Wayans family, including joining the family onstage when they were inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame during the 2025 NAACP Image Awards.
Wayans is also known for starring in the hit sitcom My Wife and Kids, the Fox drama Lethal Weapon, and the recent comedy series Poppa’s House, where he appeared alongside his son, Damon Wayans Jr.
Meanwhile, St. Denis Medical follows the doctors, nurses and staff of an understaffed and underfunded Oregon hospital as they attempt to care for patients while dealing with workplace chaos and their own personal lives.
The series stars Allison Tolman, David Alan Grier, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper and Kaliko Kauahi.
Season 3 will pick up following the events of Season 2, with romantic entanglements and personal struggles creating new challenges throughout the Emergency Department. Ron’s recovery from surgery also opens the door for Dr. Highland to make his memorable arrival.
St. Denis Medical was created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, with Ledgin serving as showrunner. Spitzer, Ledgin, Simon Heuer, Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu executive produce. The series is produced by More Bees, Inc. and Spitzer Holding Company, with Universal Television serving as the studio.
Season 3 of St. Denis Medical premieres Monday, November 2, at 8 p.m. on NBC and Peacock. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available to stream on Peacock.
