Veteran actress Crystal Fox is headed to Hulu, joining the series regular cast of the streamer’s untitled Cable Guy pilot inspired by the 1996 Jim Carrey comedy.
Fox joins an impressive ensemble that already includes Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., and Natasha Rothwell as the project moves forward in pre-production. The pilot is being produced by Hulu in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.
Fox will portray Lynette, the mother of siblings Steven (Wayans Jr.) and Gina (Rothwell). According to Deadline, Lynette is a caring mother who becomes increasingly worried about her son after his breakup. While trying to make sense of his struggles, she finds herself falling down a series of social media rabbit holes.
Unlike the original 1996 film starring Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick, the Hulu project is not a remake. Instead, it takes a similar creative approach to FX’s Fargo, honoring the original film while telling an entirely new story.
Set in the streaming era, the series follows Chip Douglas, an old-school cable technician who has become isolated and disconnected from the world. When his childhood friend Steven calls to have his cable service restored, Chip sees an opportunity to rekindle a friendship he never let go of. What begins as a long-awaited reunion gradually spirals into an unsettling obsession, exploring the darkly comedic side of modern male friendship.
Fox brings decades of acclaimed experience to the role. Throughout her distinguished career, she has appeared in both film and television, earning praise for performances in Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots, A Fall from Grace, His & Hers, The Big Door Prize, and In the Heat of the Night.
Her film credits include Driving Miss Daisy, Burden, Drop Squad, and Once Upon a Time… When We Were Colored. She has also starred alongside legendary actors including Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad, and Debbie Allen, further cementing her reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected performers.
With a talented cast and a fresh take on a beloved cult classic, Hulu’s untitled Cable Guy pilot is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing television projects currently in development.
