Cause of Death Confirmed: Kristoff St. John Died of Heart Disease Triggered By Alcohol Abuse

The cause of death for “Young and the Restless” star Kristoff St. John has been revealed. The L.A. Coroner’s Office listed his death as hypertrophic heart disease that was triggered by alcohol abuse. The disease makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood and often goes undiagnosed. The cause of death is categorized as accidental.

TMZ reports that a source close to Kristoff said the actor checked himself into UCLA Medical Center in January for depression issues, and he had just been released a few days before his death. The autopsy report also states that he was recently discharged from a mental health facility only two days before his death. He was threatening to hurt himself.

The soap star’s depression was partially linked to his son, Julian’s suicide in 2014. It also seems to be the likely trigger for Kristoff’s heavy drinking at the time of his death.

Kristoff played the role of Neil Winters on Y&R since 1991. He will be terribly missed.
