WNBA star Brittney Griner has officially filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, bringing an end to their eight-year marriage.
According to court documents filed in Fulton County, Georgia, on July 30, Griner stated that the marriage is “irretrievably broken.” The filing indicates that the couple has been separated since July 24. Brittney is also requesting joint legal custody of their 2-year-old son, Bash.
The couple’s relationship became widely known during one of the most difficult chapters of Brittney’s life. In 2022, Cherelle emerged as a tireless advocate while Brittney was detained in Russia on drug-related charges. Cherelle’s public campaign helped keep international attention on the case as U.S. officials worked to secure the basketball star’s release. Brittney ultimately returned home in December 2022 following a high-profile prisoner exchange.
Brittney and Cherelle first met while attending Baylor University and later married in June 2018. Together, they welcomed their son, Bash, in July 2024 and often spoke publicly about the joys of parenthood and rebuilding their lives after Brittney’s return to the United States.
Despite presenting a united front through some of life’s biggest challenges, the couple has now decided to move forward separately. Neither Brittney nor Cherelle has publicly commented on the reason for the split.
This marks Brittney Griner’s second divorce. She was previously married to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson before their marriage ended in 2015.
As the divorce proceedings move forward, fans continue to wish both Brittney and Cherelle the best as they focus on co-parenting their son and the next chapter of their lives.
