Brandy is taking viewers back to Hillman College with a fresh take on one of television’s most beloved theme songs.
The Grammy-winning singer and actress has been tapped to perform the opening theme for Netflix’s upcoming sequel series, A Different World, putting her own vocal stamp on the iconic song as a new generation prepares to enter the fictional HBCU.
For Brandy, the opportunity is especially meaningful because she grew up watching the original series, which premiered on NBC in 1987.
“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy said. She recalled watching the show whenever it aired and remembering the feeling the theme song gave her.
Brandy’s rendition keeps the familiar lyrics while giving the classic opening a fresh sound. She follows a musical legacy that includes legendary vocalists such as Phoebe Snow and Aretha Franklin, as well as Boyz II Men, who have all performed versions of the theme over the years.
The original theme was co-written by series cast member Dawnn Lewis, Stu Gardner and Bill Cosby. Lewis, who portrayed Jaleesa Vinson on the original series, is also returning for the Netflix sequel.
The new series centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of beloved original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah, who begins her own college journey at Hillman. Several original cast members—including Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell—are also returning.
The sequel is scheduled to premiere on Netflix September 24, 2026, nearly four decades after the original A Different World first introduced audiences to life at Hillman College.
With Brandy’s unmistakable voice leading the opening credits, the new A Different World is already delivering a powerful dose of nostalgia while welcoming a whole new generation to Hillman.
And if Brandy’s version is any indication, that iconic theme song is about to feel different—but still very familiar.
