Boxing Legend Leon Spinks Dies At 67

Leon Spinks, a former heavyweight boxing champion, has died at the age of 67.

According to TMZ, Spinks passed away surrounded by family and friends — including his wife Brenda. The boxing legend had been battling prostate cancer for the past 5 years.

Spinks is mostly recognized for being the only boxer to take the heavyweight champion from The Greatest, Muhammad Ali.

Spinks was the victor in one of the biggest upsets in sports history … when he shocked the world by defeating Ali in a 15-round, split decision win in Las Vegas in February 1978.

In 1976, Spinks also won a gold medal as a light heavyweight fighter in the Summer Olympics in Montreal.

The St. Louis native developed a passion for boxing while he was in the U.S. Marines. Spinks had a brother Michael Spinks, who was also a boxer. They both won gold medals.

Leon Spinks was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017.
