‘A Different World’ Sequel Officially Set for Fall 2026 Premiere on Netflix

Netflix is heading back to Hillman College.

The streaming giant announced during its 2026 upfront presentation that the long-awaited sequel to the classic sitcom A Different World is officially set to premiere in fall 2026.

The new series will follow Deborah Wayne, the daughter of fan-favorite couple Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman College while trying to step out of her parents’ shadow and create her own legacy. Actress Maleah Joi Moon has been cast in the lead role.

Several original cast members are returning for the sequel, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell. Other returning stars include Jenifer Lewis, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

According to reports, production on the sequel recently wrapped in Atlanta. Original series creative force Debbie Allen is returning as executive producer and will direct multiple episodes, including the premiere.

The sequel series is being led by writer and showrunner Felicia Pride, whose previous credits include Grey’s Anatomy and Bel-Air.

Originally airing from 1987 to 1993, A Different World became a groundbreaking cultural phenomenon for its portrayal of student life at a historically Black college and university. The series remains beloved decades later for its impact on television and Black culture.
