Class is officially back in session! Netflix is bringing viewers back to Hillman College after renewing its hit sequel series A Different World for a second season.
The announcement, made on October 2, 2026, comes just days after the series premiered on September 24, reintroducing audiences to the beloved fictional historically Black college and a new generation of students navigating academics, friendships, relationships and the challenges of young adulthood.
According to reports, the series made an impressive debut, landing at No. 4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 4.2 million views. It also reached the Top 10 in 15 countries, demonstrating its early international reach.
“We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations,” creator, showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride said in a statement.
Executive producer and original series veteran Debbie Allen also celebrated the renewal, expressing gratitude to audiences for embracing the new chapter of the iconic franchise.
The Netflix sequel centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy). As Deborah begins her college journey at her parents’ alma mater, she finds herself balancing independence, complicated relationships and the realities of campus life.
The series also features Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche, alongside returning fan favorites from the original sitcom, including Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson.
Season 2 is expected to pick up after the students’ summer break as Deborah and her classmates return to Hillman for their sophomore year. With unresolved romantic relationships, evolving friendships and questions about their futures, the next season promises more personal growth and new campus drama.
The renewal marks another milestone for the franchise, which originally premiered in 1987 as a spin-off of The Cosby Show. The original series ran for six seasons, ending in 1993, and became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of student life at a historically Black college.
With its blend of nostalgia, fresh faces and contemporary college expeiences, A Different World is preparing to continue its legacy for longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
