Authorities and the family of the 14-year-old slain in the recent mass shooting outside Stockton have confirmed the youth’s identity as Amari Peterson — the first victim publicly named after the tragedy.
On the evening of November 29, gunfire erupted in a banquet hall hosting a child’s birthday party attended by more than 100 people. Four individuals were killed and at least 11 others wounded. The victims included children aged 8, 9 and 14, alongside a 21-year-old man.
Friends and family described Amari as a “bright, loved and promising young soul” who loved sports — playing both football and basketball — and was already looking into colleges. According to a family fundraiser, he had no gang affiliations; the only mistake he made was “being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Local officials have emphasized the senselessness of the violence. At a news conference, San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office pledged a thorough investigation, urging witnesses to come forward. As of Monday, no arrests had been made and the motive remained unclear.
In the wake of the shooting, members of the community have gathered for vigils and memorials — leaving flowers, candles, and heartfelt messages for Amari and the other victims. Many local leaders have condemned the violence and called for stronger efforts to protect children from gunfire, even in spaces meant for celebration.
As investigators continue their work, Amari’s family and the broader community are grappling with grief, demanding justice, and uniting in calls to prevent such tragedies in the future.
