6-Year-Old Atlanta Boy Wakes From Coma Three Months After Devastating Crash

A 6-year-old Atlanta boy is showing encouraging signs of recovery after waking from a coma nearly three months after he was struck by a vehicle while walking home with his family.

Tupac Staples was hit by a car on May 1 near James Jackson Parkway Northwest and Browntown Road in Atlanta. According to the Atlanta Police Department, the child was not in a marked crosswalk when the crash occurred. The driver remained at the scene and was not charged. Tupac was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The second-grader suffered a traumatic brain injury, a broken neck, a broken leg, a punctured lung, internal bleeding, and other serious injuries. After spending nearly three months in a coma, his family says he recently regained consciousness. While he is now able to open his eyes, he has not yet been able to speak and still faces a long road to recovery.

“It’s been a struggle, it’s been a journey,” Tupac’s father, Stephen Olds, told FOX 5 Atlanta. “I’m praying that he at least comes back… praying and hoping, putting it in God’s hands.”

Tupac was scheduled to begin second grade at Scott Elementary School this week, but his injuries will likely keep him from returning to the classroom. His family believes he may need to attend school remotely while continuing rehabilitation. Doctors say his recovery will take time.

The accident has also placed an emotional and financial strain on the family. Tupac’s parents have spent months by his bedside while caring for his six siblings at home, forcing them to reduce their work hours. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover medical bills and daily living expenses.

While Tupac’s recovery is far from over, his family remains hopeful that each small step forward brings him closer to healing.

A Reminder for Drivers and Pedestrians

This story serves as a powerful reminder for everyone to stay alert on the road. Drivers should remain vigilant in neighborhoods and school zones, especially as children return to school. Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to teach children safe pedestrian habits, including using marked crosswalks whenever possible and making eye contact with drivers before crossing. A few extra seconds of caution can save a life.
