Actress and advocate Holly Robinson Peete has publicly criticized the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards for omitting Dr. Danielle Spencer from their televised “In Memoriam” segment. Spencer, best known for portraying Dee Thomas on the 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, passed away on August 11, 2025, at the age of 60 after a battle with gastric cancer.
During the Emmys broadcast on September 14, the “In Memoriam” segment honored several television luminaries, including Maggie Smith, Ozzy Osbourne, and Quincy Jones. However, Spencer’s name was conspicuously absent from the televised tribute. Instead, she was included in a more extensive “In Memoriam” video posted on the Emmys’ official website. The Television Academy explained that due to time constraints, only a limited number of individuals could be acknowledged during the live broadcast. Nonetheless, the omission sparked backlash from fans and industry peers alike.
Holly Robinson Peete, a close friend of Spencer, took to Instagram to express her dismay. She wrote, “How could the Emmys forget to mention my friend Dr. Danielle Spencer—our beloved & HILARIOUS Dee Thomas from What’s Happening!!” Peete emphasized Spencer’s impact, stating, “She broke barriers, made us laugh, and inspired a generation. Make it make sense!” She concluded, “To leave her out is not just an oversight, it’s an injustice to her legacy. We will honor her, even if they didn’t.”
Spencer’s portrayal of Dee Thomas, the spirited younger sister on What’s Happening!!, left an indelible mark on television. After the show’s conclusion, she pursued a career in veterinary medicine, earning a degree from Tuskegee University. Her transition from child star to respected professional exemplified her versatility and dedication.
The controversy surrounding Spencer’s omission highlights ongoing discussions about representation and recognition in the entertainment industry. While the Emmys’ extended tribute online acknowledged Spencer’s contributions, many feel that the televised segment should have reflected the full scope of talent and impact within the television community.
