A heartbreaking discovery in Brooklyn has left a family searching for answers after a 24-year-old Ghanaian musician was found dead inside a duffel bag abandoned on a sidewalk. The young man has been identified as Joseph Owusu, whose death has devastated his family and members of his church community.
Owusu’s body was discovered on Friday, October 30, near East 93rd Street and Avenue L in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. According to reports, a person searching for scrap metal came across the bag and eventually discovered that it contained a human body.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured two unidentified individuals arriving in a white sedan during the early morning hours, removing a large black bag from the vehicle and leaving it on the sidewalk before driving away. The footage is now part of the investigation as authorities work to determine who was responsible.
Born in the Bronx to parents who immigrated from Ghana, Owusu was remembered as a talented musician who dedicated much of his time to his faith and music. He played the organ and piano at his family’s Ghanaian Methodist church in the Bronx, where he had been involved since childhood.
His family also revealed that Owusu was studying computer science and worked providing support to individuals with disabilities. According to his older brother, Kojo Yeboah, Owusu had ambitions of pursuing a career in computer science but never got the opportunity to fulfill those dreams.

The devastating loss has been especially difficult for his family. Yeboah described his brother as a dedicated musician who could spend hours playing the piano to make sure he did not make a mistake.
Speaking about the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding his brother’s death, Yeboah expressed his desire for answers and accountability.
“I need justice for Joseph. I want the truth to come out because my brother didn’t deserve to die the way he did. He’s only 24. He had a lot of living to do,” Yeboah said.
The family has reportedly reviewed surveillance footage multiple times but has been unable to identify the individuals seen abandoning the bag.
As of November 6, police have not announced any arrests, and the New York City Medical Examiner has not publicly determined Owusu’s cause of death.
His family is now left mourning a young life filled with promise, faith, and ambition, while hoping investigators will uncover the truth behind his tragic death.
