The Charlotte Hornets are preparing to honor one of the most beloved players in franchise history. The organization announced that it will retire the No. 1 jersey of former point guard Muggsy Bogues during a special halftime ceremony on February 11, 2027.
The ceremony will take place at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, during the Hornets’ home game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Bogues will become just the third player in franchise history to have his jersey number retired, joining Bobby Phills, whose No. 13 was honored, and Dell Curry, whose No. 30 jersey was retired in March 2026.
A Trailblazer Who Made History

Standing just 5 feet 3 inches tall, Bogues holds the distinction of being the shortest player in NBA history. Despite facing challenges because of his height, he built an impressive 14-season professional basketball career through his speed, court vision, defensive ability and determination.
Originally selected by the Washington Bullets with the 12th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft, Bogues joined Charlotte through the 1988 NBA Expansion Draft. He quickly became a key figure in the franchise’s early years and spent 10 seasons with the Hornets, from 1988 to 1998.
During his time in Charlotte, Bogues appeared in 632 games, averaging 8.8 points, 8.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He remains the franchise’s all-time leader in assists, assists per game, steals and minutes played.
One of his standout seasons came in 1993–94, when he averaged 10.8 points and 10.1 assists per game, demonstrating that his impact extended far beyond his stature. He helped the Hornets reach the playoffs four times and contributed to some of the most memorable years in the team’s history.
More Than a Basketball Legend

Bogues’ influence reaches well beyond the basketball court. Alongside teammates such as Dell Curry, Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, he helped establish the Hornets as a recognizable force in the NBA during the franchise’s early years.
Fans also remember his appearance in the 1996 basketball film Space Jam, starring Michael Jordan. His journey has inspired generations of young athletes by demonstrating that determination, skill and confidence can overcome obstacles.
Following his playing career, Bogues remained connected to Charlotte and continued serving the organization as an ambassador. He also established the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation, which supports underserved youth and families through educational opportunities, food assistance and workforce development.
A Well-Deserved Honor

Reflecting on the announcement, Bogues expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the city, the Hornets organization, his former teammates and the fans who have supported him throughout his career.
For Bogues, the jersey retirement represents more than personal recognition. It celebrates a lasting relationship with a city that embraced him and a franchise he helped build.
His No. 1 jersey will soon hang in the rafters of Spectrum Center, serving as a permanent reminder of his contributions to the Hornets and his remarkable journey in professional basketball.
Congratulations to Muggsy Bogues on this well-deserved honor! His legacy proves that greatness is not measured by height, but by heart, perseverance and the impact a person makes on the game.
