Koran Irvine’s Family Demands Justice After Retired NYPD Detective Victor Romero Appears in Court in Fatal Bridge Shooting

The family of Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old husband, father of two and Con Edison employee, is demanding accountability after Victor Romero, a retired New York City Police Department detective, appeared in court Thursday, October 22, in connection with Irvine’s fatal shooting on the George Washington Bridge.

Romero, 62, pleaded not guilty to a first-degree manslaughter charge after initially being arrested on a murder charge. A judge set bail at $1 million, a decision that has drawn strong objections from Irvine’s grieving relatives.

Family Questions the Charges and Bail Decision

More than a dozen members of Irvine’s family attended Romero’s court appearance, seeking answers and justice for their loved one.

Irvine’s sister, Zeria Irvine, expressed frustration over the court’s decision, questioning why Romero was considered not to be a flight risk despite allegedly leaving the scene after the shooting.

“They say that he’s not a flight risk,” Zeria said, according to ABC7 New York. “He fled the scene. He left my brother to die.”

Zeria also remembered her brother as someone who meant a great deal to her, describing him as her hero and recalling how they spoke daily during his commute home.

The family’s concerns extend beyond the charges themselves. They are also questioning how the case is being handled and whether the decision to grant bail adequately addresses the seriousness of the allegations.

Irvine’s relatives have made clear that they want accountability as they cope with the sudden loss of a husband, father, brother and loved one.

What Happened on the George Washington Bridge?

Authorities say the deadly shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, as Irvine was driving home in a blue Volkswagen Golf on the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge.

Investigators are examining a possible road-rage encounter that reportedly began after Irvine’s vehicle nearly collided with another vehicle on an entrance ramp.

According to prosecutors’ account in court, surveillance footage allegedly showed Romero’s vehicle following Irvine closely before Romero pulled alongside him and fired a shot. Irvine was struck and his vehicle crashed into the median.

Responding Port Authority police officers found Irvine suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors also alleged that Romero left the scene and was located the following day. Investigators reportedly used surveillance footage and vehicle information to help identify him.

Romero surrendered to authorities on Wednesday, October 21, and was initially charged with murder before prosecutors proceeded with the manslaughter charge at his arraignment.

Irvine’s death has devastated his family and colleagues. He worked for Con Edison, the utility company that expressed heartbreak over the loss of one of its employees.

In a statement following his death, a company spokesperson extended condolences to Irvine’s family, friends and coworkers.

According to reports, Irvine was married and had two children, a 14-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son. His death has left his family facing an unimaginable loss while the criminal case moves forward.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is expected to present the case to a grand jury to determine whether an indictment will be issued. The $1 million bail decision and the family’s objections have added another layer of tension to a case already drawing significant public attention.

As the legal process continues, Irvine’s family is left mourning a life cut short and calling for justice. Their questions about the circumstances of the shooting, the charges and the bail decision remain central to their fight for accountability.
