Stevie Wonder has filed a lawsuit seeking to remove his former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, from a Los Angeles property where, according to allegations in the case, she has lived rent-free since July 1988.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ on October 22, 2026, Wonder, 76, claims Efferson occupied the home under a verbal agreement that required no monthly rent and was not documented in a written lease. Wonder further alleges that the arrangement has ended and that Efferson has not left the property.
Those claims have not been resolved by a court.
Dispute Over Property Access
The dispute reportedly escalated after Wonder’s representatives sought access to the home for an insurance inspection. Efferson allegedly refused to permit the inspection, according to the lawsuit and related reporting.
Wonder’s attorneys reportedly warned that the lack of access could jeopardize the property’s insurance coverage. In July, they allegedly sent Efferson notice terminating her permission to remain in the residence and directing her to vacate by August 27, 2026.
After Efferson allegedly remained in the home beyond that date, Wonder filed suit. He is asking a judge to order her to leave and is seeking damages and reimbursement for legal costs. No ruling has been issued, and the court has not determined whether Efferson must vacate the property.
Tense Exchange With Legal Team
According to TMZ, Efferson accused one of Wonder’s attorneys of using what she described as a racist, “white male privilege” tone and demanded that the lawyer stop contacting her.
Attorney David Huff reportedly rejected that characterization, saying the lawyer who initially contacted Efferson was neither white nor male. Huff also cited his grandfather’s civil rights work while warning that continued resistance to the inspection could lead to further legal action, including a possible eviction proceeding.
The reported exchange reflects the parties’ competing positions. The allegations have not been adjudicated.
Relationship Dating Back to the 1980s
Wonder and Efferson were reportedly engaged around the time the alleged living arrangement began. Wonder later married his third wife, Tomeeka Robyn Bracy, in 2017.
The lawsuit concerns whether Efferson has a continuing legal right to remain at the property. That question will be decided through the court process, unless the parties reach an agreement beforehand.
Stevie Wonder’s Musical Legacy
Wonder remains one of music’s most influential artists, known for songs including “Superstition,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” “I Just Called to Say I Love You” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” His 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life is widely regarded as a landmark recording.
