Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris, 58, has reportedly entered rehabilitation after spending more than two months hospitalized following a serious medical emergency. Organizers of a fundraiser for Paris and his family said he did not have health insurance when the emergency occurred.
Paris, a member of the group since 2001, reportedly became ill on August 6, 2026, shortly before the band was scheduled to perform with Lionel Richie at San Francisco’s Chase Center. According to information shared by organizers and other reports, he required emergency care, underwent two major surgeries and spent periods in a medically induced coma. Organizers have also said that he sustained a spinal cord injury. The details of his medical condition have not been independently confirmed.
A Major Step in His Recovery
An October 8 update from organizers of a fundraiser for Paris and his family said that he had been discharged from the hospital and had begun rehabilitation. The update also said that doctors sedated him again after he experienced breathing difficulties and elevated blood pressure.
Although entering rehabilitation is an important reported milestone, organizers indicated that Paris still faces a lengthy recovery before he can return home and work toward regaining his independence. The timeline and extent of his recovery remain uncertain.
No Health Insurance Adds to the Financial Burden
Paris and his wife, Kathy Merrick, are also reportedly dealing with the financial strain of his extended hospitalization and recovery. Organizers said the couple is seeking assistance through Medicare and workers’ compensation, though it remains unclear whether they will qualify or what expenses those programs might cover.
A GoFundMe campaign organized on behalf of the family has set a $110,000 goal to help with medical and related costs. The campaign and related updates say that Merrick and the couple’s daughter, Kyla, have remained by Paris’ side, while friends, bandmates and fans continue to offer support and prayers.
Paris’ emergency also affected Earth, Wind & Fire’s planned concert with Lionel Richie, which was ultimately canceled after scheduling changes, according to reports. The precise reasons for the cancellation have not been independently confirmed.
Y’all Know What?! is wishing John Paris continued strength and healing, and sending love to Kathy Merrick, Kyla and everyone supporting the family.
