Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Rise to Fame Inspires New Scripted Series ‘215’

Before Hollywood stardom and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff were young talents building a name in West Philadelphia.

Their early journey is now inspiring a scripted television series titled “215.”

Smith’s Westbrook Studios is developing the project with Canada’s Malar Group as part of a new partnership to finance and develop film and television projects.

A Story Rooted in West Philadelphia

Set in late-1980s West Philadelphia, 215 follows a quick-witted teenage rapper, his DJ best friend and the friends who help them pursue a record deal as the city’s hip-hop scene begins to grow.

The series will explore ambition, hometown loyalty, sudden fame and the friendships tested by success. Its title refers to Philadelphia’s longtime area code.

Westbrook Studios President of Television Terence Carter said the project draws from Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s rise while celebrating Philadelphia’s role in hip-hop history. Malar Group CEO Sayan Navaratnam called it an “untold origin story” about two people whose belief in each other helped them overcome extraordinary odds.

How Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff Met

Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff met in 1985 at a West Philadelphia house party. When DJ Jazzy Jeff’s scheduled MC failed to appear, Smith stepped up to the microphone, launching a partnership that became DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.

The duo released “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble” in 1986 and followed it with their debut album, Rock the House. Their 1988 album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper, brought international success through hits such as “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “A Nightmare on My Street.”

In 1989, they won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance for “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” becoming the first hip-hop act to receive the award.

Smith’s success expanded to television when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in 1990. DJ Jazzy Jeff appeared on the sitcom as Jazz while the duo continued reaching audiences through music.

From West Philly to Hollywood

215 will revisit the friendship, ambition and challenges behind their rise from West Philadelphia to major figures in music and entertainment.

The series remains in development, with no network or streaming platform, cast or premiere date announced.
