Tragic news has emerged out of New Jersey: the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid was shot and killed over the weekend.
Authorities confirmed Monday that Toraya Reid, 28, was fatally shot outside the Paragon apartment complex in Jackson Township on Saturday morning. Prosecutors said her boyfriend, Shaquille Green, 29, has been arrested and charged with her murder.
Police were called to the complex around 11 a.m. after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, officers found Toraya unresponsive near the exit with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.
Shortly after, officers spotted Green running down a nearby road and took him into custody without incident. He is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail, facing charges of murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. A detention hearing is pending.
Karl-Anthony Towns expressed his heartbreak over the news that Naz Reid’s sister was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, highlighting their close relationship beyond the court. The two have been teammates in Minnesota since Reid entered the league in 2019.
“Heartbroken. No words can ever take away the pain for my brother. Holding everyone close in prayer today. 🙏❤️”
Toraya was the older sister of Naz Reid, 26, who has been a standout for the Timberwolves since 2019. A New Jersey native and former LSU star, Reid has become a cornerstone for Minnesota, recently signing a five-year contract and earning the 2023–24 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award—the first in franchise history.
She is also survived by her younger sister, Jakahya Reid.
As of Monday evening, representatives for Naz Reid had not issued a public statement.
This devastating loss comes during what should have been a celebratory chapter in Reid’s career, underscoring the heartbreaking contrast between professional triumph and personal tragedy.
