Michael McDonald Reunites With Long-Lost Biological Son After DNA Discovery

Five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald has reunited with his biological son, Michael Goessling, nearly six decades after the child was placed for adoption.

Goessling, a St. Louis-area man who was adopted as an infant, always knew he was adopted and said he had a loving childhood with his adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling. However, he remained curious about his biological family.

The mystery began to unravel after a half-brother Goessling did not know existed took a 23andMe DNA test. The results identified Goessling as his half-brother, setting off a chain of discoveries that eventually led him to his biological mother and, ultimately, McDonald.

Goessling met his biological mother in person on his 58th birthday. He later spoke with his biological father over the phone, although he initially knew only that the man’s first name was Michael.

During their conversation, Goessling asked what he did for a living. The man explained that he was a musician and was preparing to tour in St. Louis. When he mentioned where he would be performing, Goessling began putting the pieces together.

“Are you Michael McDonald?” Goessling eventually asked.

McDonald confirmed that he was indeed his biological father.

The connection was especially meaningful because McDonald and Goessling’s biological mother were both just 14 years old when Goessling was conceived. They ultimately placed their son in a closed adoption, and Goessling was raised by Paul and Kay in the St. Louis area.

Despite the decades that had passed, McDonald said he and Goessling’s birth mother had continued to wonder about their son and how life had treated him.

McDonald also expressed gratitude for the parents who raised Goessling, calling them the “real rock stars” of the story and saying he was relieved to learn that his biological son had grown up happy and loved.

The father and son eventually met face-to-face, sharing an emotional embrace. Goessling recalled that McDonald opened his arms, gave him a hug and told him he loved him. Goessling said he responded with the same words.

The reunion also brought another surprise for McDonald: He discovered that he was a grandfather. Goessling has children, giving McDonald an entirely new branch of family to get to know.

For Goessling, the discovery has been equally extraordinary. He grew up listening to the Doobie Brothers and was already a fan of McDonald’s music long before learning that the legendary singer was his biological father.

McDonald, whose distinctive voice became synonymous with The Doobie Brothers through hits including “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute,” has enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades.

What began with an unexpected DNA match ultimately brought a father and son together after nearly 60 years apart. Their story is a remarkable reminder that sometimes, even after decades of unanswered questions, family can find its way back together.

Y’all Know What?! celebrates this incredible reunion and wishes Michael McDonald, Michael Goessling, and their families many years of love, healing, and new memories together.
