Eddie Murphy is heading back to television! The legendary comedian and actor has signed on to star in The Chairman, a new scripted comedy series in development at Peacock. The project marks Murphy’s first leading role in a scripted television series in decades, bringing one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedic talents back to the small screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is being developed by Murphy alongside his longtime creative collaborators, with the actor set to take on the lead role in the upcoming Peacock production.
The Chairman follows the story of a former professional football player who becomes the unlikely chairman of a major football organization. The comedy explores the challenges of navigating the business of professional sports, power dynamics and the unexpected responsibilities that come with running a major sports franchise.
The premise offers Murphy an opportunity to return to the kind of character-driven comedy that helped establish his legendary career, while exploring a new setting filled with larger-than-life personalities and plenty of comedic potential.
Murphy first rose to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s before becoming one of the biggest comedy stars in Hollywood. His film credits include iconic hits such as Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, Trading Places and The Klumps.
Although Murphy has continued to appear in television projects over the years, including voice roles and guest appearances, The Chairman represents a notable new chapter in his career as a leading man in scripted television.
The project also adds to Peacock’s growing slate of original programming as streaming platforms continue to attract established Hollywood stars and recognizable entertainment franchises.
With Murphy’s signature comedic style and a storyline set in the high-stakes world of professional football, The Chairman has the potential to deliver a fresh blend of sports, satire and comedy.
Further details, including additional cast members and a premiere date, have yet to be announced.
