Kerry Washington has been named Ambassador of the 31st annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF), which will make its Los Angeles debut May 20–23, 2027. The Emmy-winning actress, producer and director will help advance ABFF’s mission of championing Black storytellers and creating new opportunities for emerging film and television talent.
Washington’s appointment comes as ABFF launches its next chapter following its 30th anniversary. “ABFF has spent three decades championing Black storytellers and helping their voices be heard,” Washington said. “I’m honored to serve as Ambassador as the festival makes its move to Los Angeles, where it will open even more doors for the next generation of talent.”
The announcement follows ABFF’s 30th anniversary and marks the festival’s move to Los Angeles. Founder and NICE CROWD CEO Jeff Friday said Washington embodies the festival’s spirit, while NICE CROWD President Nicole Friday praised her longstanding support and commitment to creating opportunities for artists.
The festival will feature screenings, creator conversations, television previews, panels, master classes, industry events, networking and other cultural programming. Its 2027 competition lineup will include narrative features, documentaries and international films, alongside Crossroads, a new noncompetitive section focused on identity, culture, community, resilience and belonging.
Events will be held at The Grove, SLS Beverly Hills, the Original Farmers Market and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Festival passes are already on sale, with additional programming announcements expected in the coming weeks.
Washington’s credits include Scandal, Django Unchained, Ray, American Son and Little Fires Everywhere. An award-winning producer and director, bestselling author and longtime advocate, she most recently starred in and executive produced the Apple TV+ series Imperfect Women. She is also set to appear in Ben Affleck’s upcoming Netflix film Animals.
