A South Florida family is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 10-year-old Peyton Williams, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding her bicycle with her brother in Miami-Dade County.
Peyton and her brother, Brent, were riding their bikes near Northwest 117th Street and Northwest 7th Avenue on the evening of September 9 when authorities say they were struck by a vehicle.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene around 8:40 p.m. after receiving reports that two children had been hit. Both Peyton and Brent were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.
Peyton ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Her family remembers the 10-year-old as a loving child who was full of life. Her aunt, Patrice, told local news outlets that Peyton and Brent were extremely close and were “always together.” Peyton was also a cheerleader and was described by her family as a child who was loved by many.
While the family mourns Peyton, they are also praying for Brent, who remains hospitalized following the crash. According to his family, Brent underwent emergency surgery and continues to recover from his injuries.
The driver involved in the crash did not remain at the scene. Investigators believe the vehicle may have been a silver or gray 2009–2012 Nissan Versa. Authorities are asking the driver to come forward and are also urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has surveillance footage from the area to contact investigators.
A memorial featuring candles, balloons and other tributes has been placed near the crash site as family, friends and community members remember Peyton.
The family is also seeking financial assistance as they deal with the devastating loss of Peyton and Brent’s ongoing medical needs. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to help the family during this difficult time.
