The reggae community is mourning the tragic loss of Jamaican singer and actor Ras Ajai, born Brian Todd Antonio Sean Boucher, who was fatally shot in Waterford, Portmore, St. Catherine, on the night of Saturday, August 1. He was 43 years old, according to Jamaican authorities.
Ras Ajai, who gained international recognition for portraying political enforcer Claudie Massop in the 2024 film Bob Marley: One Love, had reportedly returned to Jamaica from New York just hours before the deadly attack.
According to the St. Catherine South Police Division, Ras Ajai and a 37-year-old man were walking along a road in the Waterford community when a vehicle carrying several armed men pulled alongside them. Police say one of the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene with the others.
Ras Ajai sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Spanish Town General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim was also shot and remains hospitalized under medical observation.
Authorities confirmed that Ras Ajai, who had been living on Northport Way in New York, had only recently arrived in Jamaica. Investigators have not determined a motive for the killing, and no arrests have been announced. Detectives are exploring several possible leads, including whether the attack may have stemmed from an internal dispute or gang-related conflict involving one of the singer’s associates. However, his father believes his son was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A Rising Star in Music and Film
Raised in Waterford, Portmore, Ras Ajai’s musical journey began in church after he was adopted by a pastor and his wife. Singing in the choir and learning to play instruments helped shape the artist he would become.
He later developed a signature sound blending conscious reggae with dancehall, R&B, and pop while maintaining socially conscious and inspirational messages throughout his music. His career was heavily influenced by legendary saxophonist Dean Fraser, who mentored him for nearly a decade, as well as reggae star Tarrus Riley.
Ras Ajai debuted in 2008 with Black Naturally before releasing fan favorites including Pack Up Yuh Tings, Di Ras Hot, Protect Me Jah Jah, Don’t Change, Need You Now, Can’t Deny, Money Fi Run, Smoking Loud, Success, Justice, There for Me, and Tick Up.
His career reached another milestone in 2018 when he signed with Sean Paul’s Dutty Rock Productions. Through the label, he appeared on several popular riddims, including Gang Gang, Callaloo, No Caption, Brimstone, and Brawlin. He also toured extensively throughout the United States with Sean Paul, further expanding his international fan base.

In 2024, Ras Ajai stepped into acting with his debut role as Claudie Massop in Bob Marley: One Love, the Paramount Pictures biographical film chronicling the life of reggae legend Bob Marley.
Although his role was relatively brief, his portrayal of the influential West Kingston political figure introduced him to audiences around the world and showcased another dimension of his talent beyond music.
