Popular children’s educator and YouTube star Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Accurso, is drawing widespread attention after publicly speaking out about the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a case that has sparked national conversation and calls for greater transparency.
In a post shared on Instagram, Ms. Rachel expressed support for Wells’ family and questioned whether the investigation would have unfolded differently if race had been reversed.
“We know the investigation and everything that followed would have been different if Nolan Wells were white and his friends were Black,” she wrote. “Nolan and his family deserve justice.”
Her comments quickly went viral, earning praise from supporters who agreed with her concerns while also drawing criticism from those who accused her of making assumptions before the investigation is complete.
Wells disappeared during a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, with a group of high school friends. His body was discovered two days later by a National Park Service ranger after his friends had returned to shore without him.
An independent autopsy commissioned by the Wells family determined the manner of death to be “undetermined” and noted that additional investigation is needed. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family, has cited findings that include a red discoloration on the back of Wells’ skull and said the report could not rule out the possibility that non-accidental factors contributed to his death. Authorities are also awaiting the results of a second autopsy conducted by the Mississippi medical examiner. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Former Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg was among those who criticized Ms. Rachel’s comments, saying that while Wells’ family deserves answers, public figures should avoid making race-based conclusions without evidence during an active investigation.
Despite the backlash, Ms. Rachel has stood by her decision to use her platform to address humanitarian and social justice issues. In a follow-up Instagram post, she responded to critics who urged her to “stay in her lane.”
“I’ve always cared about how children around the world are treated,” she wrote, adding that advocating for children’s humanity and human rights is central to her mission.
The Nolan Wells case continues to attract national attention as investigators work to determine exactly what happened during the fatal boating trip. Meanwhile, supporters of the Wells family continue to call for a full, transparent investigation as they seek answers surrounding the teenager’s death.
