There is encouraging news in the recovery of Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Wednesday that Mia Bieniemy has been released from the intensive care unit and is continuing to recover after being shot multiple times at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia.
Speaking with reporters at Chiefs training camp, Reid said, “She’s doing great. She’s doing better from where she was. Out of the ICU unit and making progress.” He added that the team is grateful for her improvement as she begins the next stage of her recovery.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was hospitalized after the July 26 shooting. Authorities allege that the couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah Bieniemy, was responsible for the attack. He was arrested at the scene and has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He remains in custody without bond while the case proceeds.
Reid also confirmed that Eric Bieniemy remains away from the team as he stays by his wife’s side. While there is no timetable for his return to the Chiefs, Reid emphasized that the organization fully supports his decision to prioritize his family.
“Eric’s a big part of this. We love having him here, but it’s important that he takes care of business,” Reid said, adding that he expects Bieniemy to return “soon enough” when the time is right.
The positive update comes just days after the shocking incident stunned the NFL community. As Mia Bieniemy continues to recover, the Chiefs organization and fans have rallied around the Bieniemy family with an outpouring of prayers and support.
