5-Year-Old South Carolina Boy Killed in Horrific Dog Attack at Caregiver’s Home

A 5-year-old boy was tragically killed after being attacked by two dogs while staying at a caregiver’s home in Dorchester County, South Carolina, authorities said.

The child, identified as JayCeon Gates, was attacked early Saturday morning on Chemistry Circle in Ladson, roughly 20 miles northwest of Charleston. According to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. when emergency responders were called to the scene following reports of a violent dog attack.

When deputies arrived, they found both the young boy and an adult suffering from severe injuries. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, but JayCeon was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m. despite life-saving efforts.

Authorities said the attack involved two large dogs, a bull mastiff and a pit bull terrier, both of which were later taken into custody by animal control officials. Investigators are still working to determine which animal was primarily responsible for the fatal injuries.

The adult victim, whose identity has not been released, survived the attack after receiving medical treatment.

Officials with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and the Department of Child Fatalities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. An autopsy and additional forensic reviews are also underway.

Family members described JayCeon as a “vibrant, full-of-life” child who was deeply loved by his mother and older sister. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral expenses, and a balloon release is being planned in his memory.

The tragic incident has left the community shaken as authorities work to determine how the deadly attack unfolded and whether any charges will follow.
