Fred Alexander Jr., Longtime Lakeside Drummer and Architect of ‘Fantastic Voyage,’ Passes Away

The funk and R&B community is mourning the loss of longtime Lakeside drummer and administrator Fred Alexander Jr., who passed away after nearly five decades with the legendary Dayton, Ohio-based band. The news of his death was announced on June 15, leaving fans and fellow musicians reflecting on his immense contributions to one of funk music’s most enduring groups.

Alexander joined Lakeside in 1977, just as the band was preparing to embark on the most successful era of its career. Known for his powerful, steady drumming style, he became a driving force behind the group’s signature sound, helping propel classics such as “It’s All the Way Live,” “Raid,” “Your Wish Is My Command,” and the chart-topping anthem “Fantastic Voyage.”

In addition to his role as drummer, Alexander served as the band’s administrator and general manager, helping keep the organization operating smoothly throughout decades of touring and recording. Band co-founder Stephen Shockley paid tribute to his longtime friend and bandmate, calling Alexander “the backbone to all of our records” and praising his dedication to the group’s success both on and off the stage. Shockley noted that Alexander handled everything from business operations and trademark management to travel arrangements, ensuring the band remained active and united through the years.

Lakeside, best known for its 1980 smash hit “Fantastic Voyage,” became one of the flagship acts on SOLAR Records and enjoyed a string of R&B hits throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Alexander remained a key member of the group for 49 years, continuing to perform with the band as part of “The Original Lakeside.”

Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to share memories and condolences, remembering Alexander not only for his musicianship but also for his leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the band.

Fred Alexander Jr.’s passing marks the end of an era for Lakeside, but his rhythmic legacy will continue to live on through the timeless music he helped create. He leaves behind a lasting imprint on funk and R&B history and will be remembered as one of the genre’s most dedicated and influential drummers.
