Award-winning writer, actress, and filmmaker Michaela Coel is stepping into the world of martial arts action. The acclaimed creator of I May Destroy You has signed on to write and direct a reimagining of the 1988 cult classic Bloodsport for A24.
The original Bloodsport, directed by Newt Arnold, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank Dux, a U.S. Army soldier who enters the underground martial arts tournament known as the Kumite in Hong Kong. The film became a breakout hit for Van Damme and helped launch his career as one of the biggest action stars of the late 1980s and 1990s.
Details about Coel’s version remain under wraps, and it is unclear how closely the new film will follow the original story. Variety described the project as a “reimagining,” suggesting that Coel may bring a fresh perspective to the beloved martial arts property.
In a statement announcing the project, Coel expressed her fascination with combat sports and the dedication required of athletes.
“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them,” Coel said. “I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators.”
The project marks another collaboration between Coel and A24. The Emmy-winning creator is also working with the studio on the upcoming television series First Day on Earth and co-stars in the upcoming film Mother Mary alongside Anne Hathaway.
Veteran producer Marc Toberoff will produce the remake, with Alberto Lensi also serving as a producer. Stuart Manashil and Peggy Disalle are attached as executive producers.
The announcement has generated significant buzz due to the unexpected pairing of Coel’s character-driven storytelling style with one of the most iconic martial arts films of all time. While fans await further details, the collaboration between Coel and A24 promises a bold new take on the classic action franchise.
