‘Michael’ Sequel in the Works as Lionsgate Teases More of Michael Jackson’s Story to Come

Lionsgate is officially teasing more of the King of Pop’s story after the massive success of Michael, with studio executives confirming that a sequel is now firmly in discussion.

According to , Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson recently revealed that the studio believes audiences have only seen part of Michael Jackson’s journey on screen. The first film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle, ends during the height of Jackson’s Bad era — leaving decades of the singer’s life unexplored.

Fogelson said the studio intentionally held back some of Jackson’s biggest musical moments for a possible follow-up film, promising fans that “the most popular music” is still to come.

The sequel buzz comes after Michael became one of the biggest box office hits of 2026, surpassing $700 million globally and dominating theaters worldwide. The film has also reignited interest in Jackson’s catalog, sending classic songs like “Billie Jean” and albums such as Thriller back onto music charts.

Reports indicate the filmmakers already have extensive unused footage from the original production. Earlier coverage from Variety revealed that nearly 30% of material from the film’s original cut could potentially be reused in a sequel.

The first film focused primarily on Jackson’s rise from child star to global superstar, ending before many of the controversies and legal allegations that later surrounded his career. Director Antoine Fuqua previously hinted that a sequel could tackle later chapters of Jackson’s life, including the Dangerous era, the 1993 Super Bowl halftime show, and other major moments from the singer’s career.

Actor Miles Teller, who portrays longtime Jackson attorney John Branca in the film, recently said the creative team is “excited to complete that story.”

While Lionsgate has not officially announced a release date or confirmed production, studio executives say they are committed to delivering “more Michael” following the film’s blockbuster success.
