We are honoring the life and legacy of Aleta Mitchell, the talented actress known for her memorable work on Broadway and in film, who sadly passed away on April 14, 2026, at the age of 74.
Born Sharon Aleta Haskell on February 12, 1952, Mitchell built a respected career that spanned theater, television, and film throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She became especially recognized for her performances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Serpent and the Rainbow, leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate with audiences.
On Broadway, Mitchell originated the role of Dussie Mae in August Wilson’s acclaimed production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the Cort Theatre from 1984 to 1985. She also appeared in notable Off-Broadway productions including Ohio State Murders, Distracted, and the Young Playwrights Festival. In regional theater, she portrayed Mrs. Dickson in Intimate Apparel at Westport Country Playhouse in 2014.
Television audiences may remember Mitchell from appearances on The Cosby Show, The Equalizer, and multiple episodes in the Law & Order universe. She also appeared in The Jury.
Her film credits included roles in No Mercy, The Serpent and the Rainbow directed by Wes Craven, Valmont, Malcolm X directed by Spike Lee, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil directed by Clint Eastwood.
Mitchell is survived by her husband Thomas, her son Andrew, and her mother Geraldine. A celebration of life will be held this summer.
