The long-anticipated biopic chronicling the life of hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg is officially moving forward, with a projected theatrical release expected in 2027 as production gains momentum.
The film will be directed by Craig Brewer, best known for his work on Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name. Brewer was tapped by Universal Pictures to helm what is being described as the definitive portrayal of the West Coast rap legend’s life and career.
Taking on the role of Snoop Dogg is Jonathan Daviss, widely recognized for his breakout performance in the Netflix series Outer Banks. Daviss’ casting was confirmed in 2025, marking a major career milestone as he steps into the shoes of one of hip-hop’s most influential figures.
The film will trace Snoop Dogg’s journey from his early days in Long Beach, California, to his rise in the 1990s under Death Row Records and his evolution into a global entertainment mogul.
Production is expected to take place in California, with filming ramping up in 2026 after receiving state-backed incentives to keep the project local.
While an exact release date has not yet been officially announced, industry timelines and production schedules point toward a 2027 debut, positioning the film as one of the most highly anticipated music biopics in development.
With Snoop Dogg himself involved as a producer, alongside industry heavyweight Brian Grazer, the project aims to deliver an authentic and comprehensive look at the rapper’s legacy—both on and off the stage.
