The Savannah community is mourning the loss of Linda Davis, a beloved special education teacher who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Monday morning during what authorities say began as a federal immigration-related traffic stop.
According to the Chatham County Police Department, officers responded around 7:45 a.m. to a collision at Whitefield Avenue and Truman Parkway in Savannah.
lnvestigators say 38-year-old Oscar Vasquez Lopez crashed into Davis’ vehicle while allegedly fleeing officers with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who were attempting to initiate a traffic stop.
Davis was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A second bystander vehicle was involved in the crash, but no additional injuries were reported.

Charges Filed
Lopez was taken into custody and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving without a valid license, and failure to obey a traffic control device. Federal officials stated he is a native of Guatemala who had previously been issued a final order of removal in 2024.
The crash occurred near Herman W. Hesse K-8 School, where Davis served as a special education teacher. Although students were out for the Presidents’ Day holiday, it was designated as a teacher planning day.
In a message to families, Principal Alonna McMullen described Davis as “a beloved member of our school family,” acknowledging the deep emotional impact of her passing on students and staff.
A Life Dedicated to Education
Dr. Davis had served students in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System since at least the 2022–2023 school year. Known for her dedication to children with special needs, she was remembered as compassionate, committed, and deeply invested in her students’ success.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash. The incident has sparked renewed community discussion about enforcement tactics and public safety.
Dr. Linda Davis’ legacy as an educator and advocate for children will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace to a devoted teacher, and condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and students.
