Suspect Arrested After Shooting at Greenville Transit Bus Carrying Passengers

Greenville Police have arrested a suspect following a shooting that struck a City of Greenville Area Transit (GREAT) bus carrying nine passengers early Tuesday evening.

According to a news release from the Greenville Police Department, officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to a ShotSpotter alert near the bus stop at the intersection of 5th Street and Nash Street. When officers arrived, they located a GREAT bus that had been hit by gunfire.

Authorities confirmed that the bus was occupied by nine passengers and a driver at the time of the incident. Despite the vehicle being struck by a bullet, no injuries were reported.

Police arrested 37-year-old Rakiem Dangelo Ruffin at the scene. Investigators say Ruffin told officers he was upset because the bus did not stop for him.

Ruffin is now facing a series of serious charges, including:

  • 10 counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon (one count for each passenger and the driver)
  • One count of Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle/Dwelling
  • One count of Discharging a Weapon within City Limits
  • One count of Possession of a Stolen Firearm
  • One count of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
  • One count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon

Police say Ruffin is being held without bond at the Pitt County Detention Center. A booking photo can be obtained through the detention center.

GREAT officials confirmed that bus services continued operating safely following the incident.

The Greenville Police Department continues to investigate and encourages anyone with additional information to contact local authorities.
