3-Year-Old Girl Accidentally Shoots and Kills 4-Year-Old Sister in Houston

A 3-year-old girl found a loaded gun in a Texas home and accidentally shot and killed her 4-year-old sister.

KHOU-11 News Houston reports that the shooting occurred on Sunday around 8 pm. In the house were the two girls and their parents.

Harris County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez, released a statement regarding the shooting and said it was a “very preventable” situation.

He continued saying at some point during the night, one parent thought the other was watching the girls, but they were actually unsupervised. The 3-year-old girl found a loaded pistol and fired a single shot. Her 4-year-old sister was hit and pronounced dead at the scene, Gonzalez said.

Family members heard the shot, secured the gun, and called 911.

The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and noted that, in situations like this, it is “very likely” that someone faces charges for failing to secure the weapon.

Here’s the update Gonzalez provided at the scene of the shooting:

Unfortunately, tragic events like this are becoming more common. According to Everytown Research and Policy, There were at least 2,070 unintentional shootings by children under 18 years old between 2015 and 2020. This resulted in 765 deaths and 1,366 injuries.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office recently launched a campaign to get people to lock up their guns. Additionally, they are giving away free gun safes and locks.

Let us please keep the family in our prayers. We will keep you all updated as more information is released.
