Dallas Morning News reports:

A teenager faces a capital murder charge in connection with the death of a 3-month-old boy she was baby-sitting last week, according to police documents.

Tynia Johnson, 17, was booked into the Dallas County jail on Friday. She is not related to the child, who is identified in police records as Ashton Smith.

charged in 3 month old death

She remained at the Dallas County Jail Monday afternoon with bail set at $150,000. An attorney was not listed for Johnson in court records.

Ashton’s mother and great-uncle told police that they had dropped off Ashton with Johnson about 6 a.m., according to an arrest-warrant affidavit. The baby was in good health when they dropped him off, but Johnson called both relatives sometime after noon saying Ashton was ill, according to the affidavit.

The great-uncle picked up Smith from work and they took Ashton to a hospital in Mesquite. He was then transferred to Children’s because of the severity of his injuries, police said in the affidavit.

He had a large complex skull fracture on the right side of his head, “consistent with a significant blunt force trauma to that side,” according to the affidavit. He also had suffered seizures, a subdural hematoma and a cerebral edema. Doctors didn’t expect him to survive his injuries.

Ashton died Wednesday afternoon, according to the affidavit.

Smith said Johnson, the baby sitter, told her Ashton had been in a car seat all day the day he went to the hospital, except to eat and to have his diaper changed.

“I don’t believe that’s the truth, because I’ve never seen anyone get a skull fracture from just sitting in a car seat,” Smith said.

Praying for peace and justice.
