Supreme Court Denies Rodney Reed’s Appeal But Casts Doubts In His Conviction
On Monday, the Supreme Court denied death row inmate Rodney Reed‘s appeal after being granted a stay November 2019, says before his then execution date.
The appeal was to challenge his sentence based in part on the fact that Texas relied on evidence that was later proven to be scientifically invalid.
Reed was sentenced to death more than 20 years ago for the assault, rape and strangling of 19-year-old Stacey Stites — but his attorneys with the Innocence Project say they have evidence that could exonerate him. Evidence that actually points towards another man.
“While the Court today declines to review the instant petition, it of course does not pass on the merits of Reed’s innocence or close the door to future review,” Sotomayor wrote.
