Authorities and university officials are investigating the death of a 21-year-old student whose body was found hanging from a tree early Monday morning on the campus of Delta State University (DSU).
The deceased has been identified as Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a student from Grenada, Mississippi.
University police and other law-enforcement agencies were alerted at approximately 7:05 a.m. after a DSU staff member discovered the body near the university’s pickleball courts, located centrally on campus.
At this stage, officials report that there is no evidence of foul play, but the case remains under investigation.
The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the body, and the medical examiner is expected to perform further examination to determine the official cause of death.
In response to the incident, DSU canceled classes and all centennial celebration events scheduled for Monday. Support services including counseling have been made available for students, faculty, and staff.
University President Daniel Ennis expressed sorrow over the loss, offering condolences to the student’s family, friends, and the wider campus community.
Law enforcement agencies assisting in the ongoing inquiry include the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cleveland Police Department.
