Spartan College Dean Identified as Victim in Inglewood Campus Shooting

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Dr. Cameisha Denise Clark, 35, the recently promoted Dean of Student Affairs at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology, has been identified as the woman who was fatally shot on campus last Friday in what authorities describe as a targeted act of workplace violence. Another female employee, a 37-year-old receptionist, was also injured in the attack and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The Shooting

The suspect, 40-year-old Jesse Figueroa, a former security guard at the college, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Figueroa, who had prior felony convictions, allegedly entered the campus wearing his security uniform and opened fire inside an office on the afternoon of May 2. He fled the scene but was apprehended hours later in Koreatown. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison.

Remembering Dr. Clark

Dr. Clark, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, was a distinguished alumna of Clark Atlanta University, where she earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and had previously worked at CAU. Her family described her as “the most compassionate, loving, and fiercely loyal person,” emphasizing her dedication to education and her recent promotion at Spartan College.

“We are beyond devastated. Cameisha’s life was taken from us far too soon, in an act of senseless violence that no woman should ever have to endure,” the family statement read. “She brought warmth, laughter, and grace into our lives every day. Her presence was a gift, and the void left behind is immeasurable.”

The shooting has deeply impacted the Spartan College community. Campus President Chris Becker expressed sorrow over the incident, stating that while the college prepares for various emergencies, the tragedy caught everyone off guard. Counseling services are being provided to students and staff.

Dr. Clark’s death has also resonated with the broader educational community, particularly at Clark Atlanta University, where she was recently spotlighted for her achievements. Her commitment to student development and advocacy against gun violence left a lasting impact on those who knew her. (

Figueroa is scheduled to appear in court on May 29. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting.

Our thoughts are with Dr. Clark’s family, friends, and the Spartan College community during this difficult time.
