Samuel L. Jackson And Others Star in Broadway Play Directed By His Wife LaTanya Richardson Jackson
LaTanya Richardson Jackson, actress and wife of actor Samuel L. Jackson, is making her Broadway directorial debut.
LaTanya will direct a revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Paino Lesson. She first saw the play in it’s original production back in 1987 at Yale Repertory Theater, in which her husband was a part of the cast.
Now she’s taking the play back to Broadway, and Samuel will be joining the cast again but in a different role.
Other cast members are Danielle Brooks, and John David Washington. These two will be playing the role of siblings who are at odds over whether to sell a piano that have carved faces of their enslaved ancestors.
LaTanya is mostly recognized as a Broadway actress. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance as Lena Younger in a revival of “A Raisin in the Sun.”
She will be the first woman to direct a Wilson play on Broadway.
“The Piano Lesson” is part of a series of 10 plays Wilson wrote about African American life; each is set in a different decade of the 20th century. “The Piano Lesson” takes place in the 1930s, and, like most of the plays, is set in Pittsburgh.
The revival is scheduled to begin performances on Sept. 19 at the St. James Theater; the run is expected to last 16 weeks.
