Nikolas “Niko” McKnight, the estranged son of R&B singer Brian McKnight, has passed away at the age of 32 after a courageous two-year battle with colon cancer. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his uncle, Claude McKnight, in a TikTok video posted on May 29, 2025.
In his tribute, Claude remembered Niko as “quirky, curious, and ridiculously talented,” highlighting his gifts as a singer, guitarist, and photographer. He described Niko as someone who was always a joy to be around, emphasizing his creative spirit and warm presence.
Niko publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in January 2024, expressing hope and gratitude for the support he received, particularly from his wife. Despite some signs of improvement shared in a December 2024 update, Niko ultimately succumbed to the illness.
The relationship between Niko and his father, Brian McKnight, had been strained in recent years. Brian had previously referred to his older children as a “product of sin,” and in April 2024, claimed that his ex-wife, Julie McKnight, prevented him from assisting Niko during his cancer battle. Julie disputed these claims, calling Brian a liar.
Despite their estrangement, Niko and Brian had shared the stage in the past, performing together in their group MCKNIGHT. Niko’s passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences and reflections on social media, with many expressing sorrow over the loss and the complexities of family relationships.
As the McKnight family navigates this profound loss, Claude McKnight emphasized the importance of love and healing, urging others to approach the situation with compassion and understanding.
@claudemcknight I’m devastated at my nephews passing. If you comment please do do in love, and NOT at what you may have heard about the relationship my brother had/has with his kids. Thank you 🙏🏾 #nephew #cancersucks #rip #love #family ♬ original sound – Claude Mcknight
Niko McKnight is survived by his wife, mother Julie, and other family members who remember him for his artistic talents and the joy he brought into their lives.
