Kyren Lacy, a former LSU wide receiver and 2025 NFL Draft prospect, died by suicide on April 12, 2025, in Houston, Texas. He was 24 years old.
Authorities from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that Lacy sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound before crashing his vehicle during a police pursuit. The incident began after Lacy allegedly discharged a firearm during a family dispute and fled the scene.
Lacy’s Legal Troubles
Lacy’s death occurred just two days before a scheduled grand jury hearing in Louisiana regarding a December 2024 car accident. He was accused of causing a fatal collision that killed a 78-year-old former Marine and fleeing the scene without rendering aid. He then declared for the 2025 NFL Draft two days after the incident.
In January, he was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving but was out on bail.
The civil rights division of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office was notified after Lacy’s death and is investigating the case. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will conduct an autopsy on Lacy, authorities said.
Lacy Family Speaks Out
LSU and Lacy’s family expressed grief, with his father urging greater awareness of mental health issues. His father, Kenny Lacy, shared an emotional message on Facebook urging parents to prioritize mental health discussions with their children.
“Mental health is real, and for the most part, it’s invisible, don’t ignore the signs, even if they may seem small. Our lives have changed forever and this will never be ok, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here.”
Lacy’s death has sparked renewed calls for attention to mental health support in young athletes. NFL players, including Malik Nabers and Dak Prescott, expressed deep sorrow over his passing and emphasized the importance of seeking help for mental health struggles.
