New Film Sheds Light On Kendrick Johnson’s Mysterious Death
The documentary Finding Kendrick Johnson premiered Friday and the story is shedding light on the mysterious death of the 17-year old.
Eight years ago, Kendrick Johnson was found dead, rolled up in a gym mat at Lowndes High School.
The state ruled his death an accident due to positional asphyxia from diving into the mat to grab his sneakers; however, when his family hired their own private forensic pathologist, it was determined that he died from non-accidental blunt force trauma.
The forensic pathologist also discovered that the teenager was missing organs, a detail that was overlooked or not revealed in the original autopsy report.
Two of Johnson’s white classmates were considered persons of interest by the FBI. However, their father was an FBI agent who resigned after a raid on their home, searching for evidence for Johnson’s case. The classmates were never arrested.
In March, a local sheriff reopened Johnson’s case. The decision to do so came after the department received long-awaited documents from the Department of Justice that closed the case in 2016.
In the documentary, the story is told through the eyes of his family and close friends with actress Jenifer Lewis narrating. The “Hollywood Mama” shared that the film has been moving up in the streaming charts.
Blackfilm reported that the documentary is the product of a four-year investigation into the death of the high school athlete at his school in Georgia.
Director Jason Pollock, who made the documentary Stranger Fruit about Michael Brown, believes it is beyond time for Johnson’s story to be told.
“The case of Kendrick Johnson is one of the most important in U.S. history. KJ deserves justice, and hopefully, our film will help his family get one step closer to that outcome,” Pollock said.
The film is being distributed by Gravitas Ventures and is in select theatres and available on-demand.
