Latonya Pottain, a participant on Season 11 of TLC’s My 600-Lb. Life, has passed away at the age of 40. She died on May 17, 2025, at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, following a cardiac arrest.
The preliminary cause of death was determined to be congestive heart failure, according to the Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office.
Pottain’s health struggles were well-documented on the reality series. At the time of her appearance, she weighed approximately 632 pounds and faced significant challenges in adhering to the weight-loss program prescribed by Dr. Younan Nowzaradan. Despite hiring a personal trainer, she cited food as a coping mechanism for her mental health, stating, “When I eat, it takes the stress away.” Her journey on the show ended when Dr. Nowzaradan informed her that he could no longer assist her due to her inability to follow the program.
In the months leading up to her death, Pottain’s health continued to decline. She had been bedridden since June 2024 due to severe health complications, including debilitating sciatica. Weighing approximately 705 pounds at the time of her death, she had previously reached out to fans on social media, asking for prayers and expressing that her heart condition had worsened.
On the day of her passing, family members visited her home and noticed she was having trouble breathing and appeared extremely uncomfortable. Later that day, she called an ambulance after experiencing cardiac arrest, which ultimately led to her death.
Pottain’s death adds to a growing list of former My 600-Lb. Life participants who have passed away, highlighting the severe health risks associated with morbid obesity. Her family is currently finalizing funeral arrangements and has invited the public to offer support through prayers, flowers, and donations.
