Mama Cox was known for advocating to make the fashion industry more inclusive for those with disabilities and also for women of color.
NY Daily News Reports:
Pop star Rihanna mourned Cax’s death.
“A queen. A force. A powerhouse beauty that brought her strength to the @savagexfenty stage this year inspiring so many across the globe,” Rihanna said in a tweet. “Rest In Power sis.”
Cax, born Cacsmy Brutus, spoke openly about her disability and shedding tired beauty standards.
The Haitian-American model told MSNBC in July that she struggled with depression and felt “ashamed” about how she looked after her amputation at age 14. But she eventually grew comfortable with her body, cultivating a significant following and wearing an array of colorful prosthetics as she graced fashion runways.
Cax studied at the City College of New York, graduating in 2012. She said she picked up her nickname as a student. In 2016, she was invited to the White House’s Design For All Showcase.
She said she flourished when she embraced her prosthetic as part of who she was.
“After my amputation I had so much body insecurities, if my future self came up to me and told me that one day I’d transcend these feelings and start seeing my body as art, I would never believe it,” Cax said in an Instagram post in October.
RIP Mama Cax! You will truly be missed by many! Let us please keep her loved ones in our prayers.
