Mike Epps is joining forces with acclaimed creator Kenya Barris for a new CBS sitcom that blends family drama with sharp humor against a backdrop of real-life tragedy. According to Deadline, the untitled half-hour comedy explores themes of family, community, and legacy, set in the aftermath of devastating wildfires in Altadena, California.
The series centers on two estranged Black brothers who reunite to sell their late grandmother’s home following the fires. Epps, the only confirmed cast member so far, will portray one of the brothers. Their plans take an unexpected turn when they discover the grandmother’s longtime caretaker now owns a share of the property—and refuses to sell. Forced to live together under one roof, the brothers must confront their differences and redefine what family and community truly mean.
Barris, best known as the creator of Black-ish, is writing and producing the series through BET Studios, where he is a principal, in collaboration with CBS Studios. The show is deeply rooted in Altadena’s culture and history, adding emotional depth by drawing inspiration from the January 2025 Eaton Fire—a catastrophic blaze that claimed at least 19 lives and destroyed more than 9,000 structures.
Kenya Barris continues to expand his creative footprint across television and film. His recent work includes the Netflix series #blackAF and the 2023 film You People, which he co-wrote and directed. Barris also served as a writer on hit shows like Girlfriends and The Game, and penned Barbershop: The Next Cut. His production company, Khalabo Ink Society, currently has The Vince Staples Show (Netflix) and Diarra From Detroit (BET+) renewed for second seasons.
Mike Epps, meanwhile, remains one of the busiest names in comedy. He stars in Netflix’s The Upshaws, which has earned 10 NAACP Image Award nominations, including an Outstanding Actor win for Epps in 2024. The Next Friday star is also on a national stand-up tour and recently dropped his latest special, Ready to Sell Out. On the big screen, Epps wrapped filming on Black Madam, a Sony/Marvel project slated for release in 2024.
With Barris’ signature blend of sharp wit and cultural commentary, paired with Epps’ comedic chops, the upcoming series promises a fresh, heartfelt take on family dynamics—and what it means to hold on when everything around you is gone.
