Michael Che Of SNL Covers Rent For Tenants Living In Late Grandmother’s Building
Saturday Night Live star Michael Che has to be making his grandmother proud. The Saturday Night Live star, who recently loss his grandmother to coronavirus, announced that he will be covering one month’s rent for all tenants that are living in the NYC public housing building she was residing in –totaling 160 units.

Che revealed in a now-deleted Instagram post last week that his grandmother Martha died April 5 after contracting COVID-19. “I’m obviously very hurt and angry that she had to go through all that pain alone,” he wrote at the time. “But I’m also happy that she’s not in pain anymore. And I also feel guilty for feeling happy.”
According to the NY Times, Che grew up in a housing project on Allen Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and has held fundraisers for NYCHA residents before.
During last weekend’s virtual episode of “SNL” the star signed off from his segment saying, “From Weekend Update, I’m Martha’s grandbaby.”
